If the sun is out, you’ve got power I’ve used solar power chargers before, but it was not possible to measure the output directly because the solar power was used to recharge a battery that was built into the unit. However, the Sol-Wing solar panel has no battery – the output goes directly to a USB charging cable, so it was possible to measure the output with a USB power meter. When I did this, the results were pretty impressive. The Sol-Wing was recharging my smartphone directly with almost half an Amp of current. That’s pretty impressive for barely three-quarters of a square foot of solar panels.Physically the panels fold up into a compact size for carrying. When they’re opened, nylon loops allow the panels to be secured to the ground, on a backback, or whichever way works best to catch the sun’s rays. The Sol-Wing solar panel is ideal for times when an electrical power source is not available, such as for hiking or camping, or during emergencies when the power is out…

Good panel, needs a battery for low light Bottom line: good solar solution but (at least in our experience) you should buy an external battery solution along with the panel. Here is what we found…We just spent a week in the back country with the Sol-Wing. It is reasonably light weight, durable, flexible, and we were impressed that it delivered all the power we needed for our iphones (x2) along the way and had capacity to spare (we did have very nice weather at high altitudes and cool temperatures). The good news: in full sunlight, the panel adds as much as 25% – 30% to a (new) iPhone 5 battery in an hour. It really shines (pardon the pun) when you set it out while stationary in camp. The bad news: attached to a backpack it does not perform so well even in bright sunlight. After some experimenting we decided that the problem is more related to the iPhone than Sol-Wing (no idea how other devices will react). If you pass through a shady place or a cloud passes over, the power drops below the minimum…
